| 授業のねらい /Learning Objectives |
Tribology, derived from the Greek word tribos meaning “rubbing,” is the science of surfaces in relative motion. The term is defined as “the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and of the associated subjects and practices” (OECD, 1969). This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the mechanisms and roles of friction, lubrication, and wear in engineering applications, as well as the recent developments in the field and practical approaches to solving tribological problems. |
| 到達度目標 /Outcomes Measured By: |
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to explain the theory and applications of tribological systems and evaluate the tribological characteristics of major machine elements such as bearings and seals. |
| 授業計画 /Course Schedule |
Total class hours: 12 hours 1. Introduction (What is tribology? Scope and topics of tribological systems) 2. Surfaces and Friction (Surface characteristics, surface roughness, and friction) 3. Lubricants (Liquid and solid lubricants; lubricant additives) 4. Review I* 5. Fluid-Film Lubrication (Reynolds equation, journal bearings, oil whirl and oil whip, hydrostatic bearings) 6. Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) (Introduction to EHL, EHL theory, traction, and engineering applications) 7. Boundary Lubrication and Tribo-materials (Boundary and mixed lubrication, wear, seizure, materials, and surface treatments) 8. Review II* *TBA (To Be Announced) Note: The schedule is subject to change. Students are expected to read the assigned references on tribology before each class. They are also encouraged to review relevant mathematics, particularly differential equations, prior to the lectures. Students are strongly encouraged to prepare for and review each lecture. For each 90-minute class, students are expected to spend approximately four additional hours on self-study. |

| 教科書・参考書に関する備考 | The lectures will complement and extend the contents of several textbooks, incorporating the latest scientific, engineering, and technological developments through lecture notes and handouts. As no single textbook comprehensively covers all topics addressed in this course, students are strongly encouraged to access electronic journals via the university library and read relevant research articles. |
| 成績評価方法 /Grading Guidelines |
Two take-home assignments (50% each). To pass the course, students must achieve an overall average score of 60% or higher across the assignments. No resit examination or reassessment will be offered. One assignment will be a written report, and the other will consist of a literature survey. The assignments will be assessed based on the following criteria: i) Originality and depth of interpretation and discussion, ii) Clarity and effectiveness of communication; iii) Appropriate use of figures and tables and adherence to an appropriate report format and presentation; iv) Effective use of relevant literature and reference materials, and v) Submission by the specified deadline. Further details will be provided during class. |
| 履修上の注意 /Notices |
The submission of reports containing text generated by generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, without proper acknowledgment and presented as the student's own work will be regarded as plagiarism. Students are expected to properly acknowledge and cite all sources of information, including text, ideas, interpretations, figures, tables, and data. Any lecture cancellations or schedule changes will be announced during class and/or posted on the Moodle course page. |
