授業のねらい
/Learning Objectives
This course is designed to provide doctoral students with an opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in giving a research presentation in English.
到達度目標
/Outcomes Measured By:
1. Demonstration of the verbal and non-verbal skills needed to give an effective English presentation.
2. Demonstration of understanding of how to describe visual aids that will effectively communicate the research data.
3. Production and presentation on an assigned topic.

/Course Schedule

Day 1: Introduction & Physical Skills
Day 2: Physical Skills Continued
Day 3: Visual Skills
Day 4: Managing Audience Q&A
Day 5: Presentation Update Day
Day 6: Final Presentations and Active Q&A

Note:
The course will be held in February annually.
This is an intensive course.
Homework is required to be prepared during the course in the form of presentation preparation and research on the assigned topic.
Details about the course are emailed directly to PhD students in winter, prior to the course starting.

Laptop computer, software such as PowerPoint or Keynote or similar. ノートパソコン、PowerPointやKeynoteなどのソフトウェア、またはそれに類するもの。
教科書・参考書に関する備考 Necessary materials will be distributed in class. Students should bring their laptops to all classes.
成績評価方法
/Grading Guidelines
Students will be graded on
(1) Class participation
(2) The final presentation.


The course result will be sent directly to the PhD Supervisor. The result will not be available on Campus Square.

This part of the course focuses on presentation skills, separately, you will also need to present at a conference in English. Your PhD supervisor is responsible for working with you to organize presenting at a conference. Please discuss that directly with your supervisor.  You must do that within the first 3 years of your PhD studies.

Please note, even if you have presented at a conference before your PhD studies, you will still need to present during your PhD. Any questions about which conference you should present at, or your conference abstract etc. should be directed to your PhD supervisor.
履修上の注意
/Notices
As of 2025, absences are for serious reasons only. A student who misses more than 1 class day will automatically fail the course and have to register for the class the following year. The only exception to an absence for is an infectious disease or for a serious reason. Each class day of the course builds on the previous day. Therefore, attendance is crucial.

This class will be conducted entirely in English. Students are expected to attend all days of this intensive course. Students are expected to submit all assigned homework. Failure to attend or to submit homework may result in failing the course.  Students must bring their laptops each day of the course.
