授業のねらい
/Learning Objectives
Tribology' from the Greek 'tribos' for 'rubbing', is the science of surfaces in moving contact. The term 'tribology' is defined as: the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and of the practices related thereto (of related subjects and practices) [OECD, 1969]. The aim of the course is to teach students the mechanisms and the role of friction, lubrication and wear in engineering fields, including state of the art in the information and practical solutions of the problems.
到達度目標
/Outcomes Measured By:
On completion of this course, students should have an up-to-date knowledge of theory and application of tribological systems and an in-depth understanding of major frictional components of machines such as bearings and seals.
授業計画
/Course Schedule
Total class hours: 12 hrs.
1. Introduction (What is tribology? Topics of tribological systems)
2. Surface and friction (Surface, Roughness, Friction)
3. Lubricants (Liquid/Solid lubricant, Additives)
4. Fluid film lubrication (Reynolds equation, Journal bearings, Oil whip/whirl, Hydrostatic bearings)
5. Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (What is EHL? EHL theory, Traction, Application of EHL);
6.*Reviews
7. Boundary lubrication (Boundary/Mixed lubrication, Wear, Seizure), Tribo-materials (Materials, Surface treatment)
8. Summary
*: on-demand video lecture (TBS)
- subject to change
The students are expected to read the references on tribology prior to the class. They should refer to a math textbook and refresh your knowledge especially on differential equations. Preparations and reviews of the lectures are intensely recommended.
For each 90-minute class, students are expected to undertake an additional 4 hours of self study.
N.B.: The course is in the classroom or, alternatively, on Moodle and Zoom in 2022. <Owing to the epidemic situation of COVID19, the plan and implementation method may be changed.>

教科書・参考書に関する備考 The lectures will broaden the coverage of several textbooks and provide the latest scientific, engineering and technical information with the class note as well as handouts. No textbook is listed as a complete reference for this course. To access to the e-journals on the university library site and to read the papers will be strongly recommended.
成績評価方法
/Grading Guidelines
Two take-home assignments (50% x2). Students who obtain a 60% + average over the examination and the assignments pass the course (no resit). One assignment is description type and the other is bibliographic survey. The reports will be assessed as follows: Your own interpretation and thoughts, clarity of communication, effective use of figures and tables, application of material and references, and submission within the deadline. The details will be explained in the class.
<Owing to the epidemic situation of COVID19, the plan and implementation method may be changed.>
