授業のねらい
/Learning Objectives
Language is one of the important aspects of culture, and is a sort of looking-glass, through which we can see and understand culture. This course aims at providing the students with fundamental knowledge about linguistics, a scientific study of language. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding how diverse languages in the world are in the structural sense, particularly their sound aspects. Through exercises and activities (homework/assignments) to be given throughout this course, the students are expected to understand how the linguistic sounds are structured and to acquire basic methods for computer-aided experimental analysis of linguistic sounds.

/Course Schedule
Hours in total: 10.5h

Week 1: Introduction
Week 2: How speech sounds are structured: Introduction to phonetics
Week 3: Introduction to computer-assisted studies of speech sounds
Week 4: Vowels
Week 5: Consonants
Week 6: Prosody: Accent, Rhythm, Intonation
Week 7: Term/final examination

*NOTE: There will be an assignment or exercise almost every week reviewing the content of a lesson; be sure to prepare for it.

成績評価方法
/Grading Guidelines
The score of each student is evaluated by an End-term Assignment 50% (to evaluate Outcomes1,2 and 3) and reaction papers/assignments 50% (to evaluate Outcomes 1,2 and 3). A score of 60 or above is required to pass this class.

特に本講座は毎回のように練習問題等を宿題として課すため、くれぐれも受講生は覚悟をしておくこと。
また、居眠りや私語等を行う者は容赦なく教室から出させる。
