授業のねらい | 'Tribology' from the Greek 'tribos' for 'rubbing'; is the science of surfaces in moving contact. The term 'tribology' is defined as: the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and of the practices related thereto (of related subjects and practices) [OECD;1969]. The aim of the course is to teach students the mechanisms and the role of friction; lubrication and wear in engineering fields; including state of the art in the information and practical solutions of the problems. |
授業の目標 | On completion of this course; students should have an up-to-date knowledge of theory and application of tribological systems and an in-depth understanding of major frictional components of machines such as bearings and seals. |
授業計画 | 1. Introduction (What is tribology? Topics of tribological systems) 2. Surface and friction (Surface; Surface contact; Roughness; Friction) 3. Lubricant (Classification; Mineral oil; Liquid lubricant; Additives; Solid lubricant) 4. Fluid film lubrication (Lubrication theory; Reynolds equation; Sliding bearings; Journal bearings; Oil whip/whirl; Hydrostatic bearings; Thermohydrodynamic lubrication) 5. Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (What is EHL? EHL theory; Traction; Application of EHL; Rolling fatigue) 6. Boundary lubrication (Boundary lubrication; Mixed lubrication; Wear; Seizure) 7. Tribo-materials (Tribo-materials for sliding bearings; rolling bearings; gears; cams; seals; journals; tools and sliding parts; Surface treatment) |
教科書及び教材 | The lectures will broaden the coverage of textbooks and provide the latest scientific; engineering and technical information by the class note as well as handouts. No textbook is listed as a complete reference for this course. The note is available on the web. To access to the e-journals (http://mitlib.lib.muroran-it.ac.jp/ english/index-e.html) and read the up-to-date references will be also recommended. |

成績評価方法 | Two take-home assignments (Review: 30%; Modeling and Analysis: 50%) and quizzes (in class: 20%). The 'review' assignment will be given at the beginning of the course and the 'analysis' assignment will be at the end of the course. The assignments will be assessed as follows: Structure; Clarity of communication; Effective use of figures and tables; Application of material; and Your own analysis and interpretation. |
履修条件等 | The students should read the references on tribology prior to class. They should also refer to a math textbook and refresh your knowledge especially on differential equations. |
教官からのメッセージ | The lecture notes; handouts and information written on a blackboard will be given in English; whereas the lecture will be distributed in Japanese. International students should contact the lecturer prior to the course. The office-hours are: 15:30-16:30 (and 16:30-17:30) on every Monday; Room 310-3; Bldg. B. |
その他 | This course will open twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday, sharing with Advanced Control System Design. The details will be annouced on the bulletin board of Mechanical Systems Engineering Department and in the first day of the class. |
